Review Your Messages
The My Messages page lists the messages SpamFoo checked for your mailbox. Use it to find a message, see how SpamFoo handled it, and fix a wrong result.
Some of your mail may not appear here. For example, if your mail server doesn't send a message to SpamFoo to be checked, SpamFoo never sees it.
Open My Messages
- Open the SpamFoo Dashboard. See Open Your Dashboard.
- In the left menu, go to My Email > My Messages.
Only messages sent to your own mailbox appear here. That's true for domain admins too.
Choose a Time Range
Use the menu in the top right to pick Last Hour, Last 6 Hours, Last 24 Hours, Last 7 Days, or Last 30 Days. How far back your messages go also depends on how long your administrator keeps scan history. Older messages may not appear even with a longer time range.
Filter Messages
The filters narrow the list to the messages you care about.
- Set one or more filters.
- Click Search. You can also press Enter in a text box.
- To remove all filters, click Clear.
| Filter | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Detection Type | Shows only Not Spam, Spam, Phishing, or Classification only messages. All shows everything. |
| Detection Path | Shows only messages decided a certain way, such as by sender reputation, by a rule, or by what SpamFoo learned from you. See Common Reasons. |
| Verified | Shows only messages with one sender check result. See The Verified Column. |
| Sender Domain | Shows only mail from a domain, such as example.com. |
| Sender IP | Shows only mail from one IP address. An IP address is the number that identifies the server that sent the message. |
Classification only means SpamFoo only sorted the message into an Email Classification. It didn't check that message for spam. This can happen, for example, when your mailbox was recently set up with SpamFoo and SpamFoo sorted the mail already in your Inbox.
Read the List
The heading above the list shows how many messages match, with a colored bar and the percent that were not spam, spam, phishing, or classification only.
Each row shows:
- Date: when SpamFoo checked the message. Newest messages come first.
- Sender: the sender's domain, with the sender's IP address under it.
- Verified: whether the sender passed email sign-in checks. This column only shows in wide windows.
- Detection Type: the result. Extra tags can appear next to it:
- Override means a spam rule, yours or an administrator's, decided the result.
- A reason tag, such as Reputation block or Learned (spam), means something other than SpamFoo's usual models decided. See See Why a Message Was Spam.
- Classification: the Email Classification. Spam and phishing show a dash instead.
The Verified Column
The Verified column tells you whether the sender is really who the From address says. SpamFoo works this out from email sign-in checks called SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. These checks let a domain prove which servers are allowed to send its mail.
| State | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Verified | The sender of this email is valid for the claimed From address. |
| Spoofed | This message may not be from the domain it says it's from. The sign-in checks failed. |
| Blocked | The sender is untrusted because it sends a lot of spam. |
| Unknown | The sender couldn't be verified. This also covers messages that a rule or your past corrections decided before the checks ran. |
See a Message's Details
Click a message to open the Message Detail panel. From top to bottom it shows:
- The result in large type, with any reason tags.
- Basic facts: Timestamp, Latency (how long SpamFoo took to check it), Sender, IP, Recipient, and Classification.
- Sender Verification: the Verified state, what it means, and why this message got it.
- Create Rule and Report Misclassification buttons. See Take Action on a Message.
- Message Content: the subject and body, if your server keeps them. If it doesn't, you'll see Message content was not retained.
- Processing Steps: each step SpamFoo went through to reach the result, with Pass or Fail where it applies.
To learn how to read these sections, see See Why a Message Was Spam.
Take Action on a Message
Right-click a message in the list (or press and hold on a touch screen) to see these options. Some also appear as buttons in the Message Detail panel.
- Open details: opens the Message Detail panel.
- Create rule: starts a spam rule for the sender's domain. The rule is added to your own rules. See Manage Your Rules.
- Create rule for IP: starts a spam rule for the IP address that sent the message.
- Report Misclassification: tells SpamFoo what the message should have been. See Correct a Wrong Result. After you report a message, this changes to Reported to SpamFoo.
In the rule window, check the sender, choose Spam or Not Spam under Action, and click Create. The Create Rule button in the details panel picks Not Spam for you when the message was spam or phishing.
